About Wayne Pacelle and The Bond

Wayne Pacelle President/CEO of The Humane Society of the United StatesThe Bond is a fascinating exploration of humanity’s eternal bond with animals and an urgent call to answer the needs of millions of at-risk creatures. Both sobering and uplifting, The Bond argues that humans have an instinctive connection with animals – a connection Wayne Pacelle has felt acutely for as long as he can remember. The book looks at the origins of the human–animal bond, discusses the severing of that bond in the industrial era, and presents a workable vision of growing economies free from the harsh exploitation of animals. So many cruelties are inflicted on animals, but the good news is that we humans have the power to turn this situation around.

During his seventeen years with The Humane Society of the United States, including seven as president and CEO, Wayne Pacelle has played a leading role in transforming the organization, the nation’s largest animal protection charity, into a dynamic public force and voice for all animals. He has been profiled in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times, and has appeared on almost all of the major network television programs, from 60 Minutes to the PBS NewsHour. He received his B.A. in history and studies in the environment from Yale University in 1987.

Rosa Vanoni didn’t plan on being an activist in Ojai on Saturday. It happened rather by chance.

“We were on our way up here to see some estate sales,” said the Somis resident, traveling with her mother. “But we saw this was happening, so we stopped to see it,” she said.

Vanoni and her mom along with several dozen others gathered at the Primavera Art Gallery on Highway 33 in Ojai’s Arcade, to hear Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States, talk about his new book, “The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them.”

“I have a special place in my heart for Ojai and for Ventura County,” said Pacelle, who is touring the nation with his book. Read More »

Ojai Valley News

U.S. Humane Society CEO To Visit Ojai

By Misty Volaski

Saturday, Ojai’s Primavera Gallery is going to the dogs — and cats, chickens, owls, and mountain lions. Primavera owners Khaled and Sheryl Al-Awar will host a reception and book signing for Wayne Pacelle, the president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, this Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. Pacelle will also be touring Rancho Matilija, where residents banded together to successfully stop the use of toxic rodenticides which were killing off many more animals than intended. “It’s not possible to restrict (the toxins) to animals you’re trying to remove,” Pacelle said. “It cycles through the food chain. But people are becoming more aware of the ripple effect of rodenticides and other poisons used to kill wildlife. I’m looking forward to learning more about it (Rancho Matilija’s efforts).”

The Al-Awars are excited to offer locals an opportunity to meet the president of the world’s biggest group for animal protection. “We feel really privileged to have Mr. Pacelle come to the gallery to speak with the public, to do a book signing,” Khaled Al-Awar said. “He is a man of such heightened awareness.”

Pacelle’s Saturday visit to the valley is part of a national book tour for “The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them,” which has recently been on The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times best-seller lists. Read More »

Christopher Ries: Sculptor in Four Dimensions

Christopher Ries: Sculptor in Four Dimensions
Length, Width, Height, and Light

Artist Christopher RiesArtist’s Reception:
Saturday the 19th of March, 2011
6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.

Primavera Gallery
214 East Ojai Avenue
Ojai, California 93023
Light Appetizers and Wine will be Served

Reis’s use of light as a primary material for creating art sets his work apart. His designs harness the energy of light to drive illusions. Visions of living flowers and soaring gothic arches inhabit the interior of his sculptures. The designs within the piece often appear to be larger than the actual size of the glass sculpture that surrounds it. This effect is what Ries refers to as “the fourth dimension” in his work.

“We all think about light. Glass embodies it. Glass is the one medium that gathers, focusses, amplifies, transmits, filters, diffuses, and reflects it. It is the quintessential medium for light. I see it all on a symbolic level.”
